DHHS Interpreter Service provides qualified interpreters* with skills to match the client who is Deaf or Hard of Hearing and the customer’s needs.  Interpreters are matched also with the setting of each assignment.

 

*The term qualified interpreter is defined by the regulation (ADA Title II and III) as:…an interpreter who is able to interpret effectively, accurately and impartially both receptively and expressively, using any necessary specialized vocabulary.

 

DHHS interpreters are skilled in a variety of communication modes, including American Sign Language (ASL), contact sign, signed English, transliteration, oral interpreting, tactile signing for persons who are Deaf-Blind as well as other communication methods, depending on the preference of the client.

 

To request an interpreter, contact DHHS with the following information:

 

1.  Requestor’s name and contact number

2.  Description of appointment:

     a. date starting and length of time needed for services

     b. type of setting (doctor appointment, counselor, lawyer’s office, court, meeting, 

         workshop, etc.)

3.  Your name, telephone number, and fax number.

4.  Name of Deaf/Hard of Hearing Client.

5.  Address of service location.

6.  Name and number of contact person at the service location.

7.  Billing name, address and confirmation signature.
